Over the last 12 months the New Zealand economy has contracted due to a recession. This has resulted in over 80,000 skilled workers leaving the country, mainly to work in Australia. Economists are expecting a skilled worker shortage in 2025 as the recovers. Due to the economic downturn the NZ Government has made it much more difficult and expensive for employers to hire overseas workers.

Other skilled workers can be placed if employers can provide evidence that these skills are not available in New Zealand. Workers will require a job offer before qualifying to apply for a work visa.
